316/316L molybdenum-based stainless steel pipes, compared to 304, feature the addition of molybdenum, resulting in superior resistance to seawater, salt spray, and weak acid corrosion. 316 offers high strength, making it suitable for small-batch welding of components; 316L, with its ultra-low carbon content and corrosion-resistant welds, is the mainstream material for chemical, seawater treatment, pharmaceutical, and coastal engineering projects. Key Differences Between 316 and 316L Stainless Steel Pipes

316 Stainless Steel Pipe: Carbon content ≤0.08%, higher mechanical strength, slightly lower price than 316L.

Applications: Small-scale welding of small parts, normal temperature and dry environments, no long-term acid or alkali immersion, equipment frames, conventional seawater indirect cooling.

Disadvantages: Intergranular corrosion is prone to occur in welds after large-scale continuous welding; long-term exposure to salt spray and weak acids can easily lead to localized rusting.

316L Low-Carbon Stainless Steel Pipe: Ultra-low carbon (carbon ≤0.03%), effectively avoids chromium carbide precipitation during welding, requires no post-weld heat treatment, and the weld's corrosion resistance remains unchanged.

Advantages: Excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion; not easily corroded even after long-term immersion in acids, alkalis, seawater, and saline media; the mainstream choice for engineering projects.

Applications: Fully welded pipelines, coastal areas, seawater treatment, chemical weak acid media, pharmaceutical and food production lines, high-temperature heat exchange equipment.

Disadvantages: Tensile strength is slightly lower than 316, and the unit purchase price is slightly higher.


Compared to 304, 316/316L has unique core advantages:

Extremely strong resistance to salt spray and chloride ion corrosion:The addition of molybdenum makes it resistant to seawater, salt water, disinfectants, and the damp salt spray of the seaside. Unlike 304, it won't develop pitting or rust spots in hot springs, sewage treatment, or marine equipment.

Resistant to acids, alkalis, and chemical media:It can withstand long-term contact with acetic acid, phosphoric acid, diluted acids and alkalis, and bleach. It's the preferred choice for chemical plants, cleaning equipment, and electroplating pipelines.

Superior high temperature resistance and oxidation resistance:Its high-temperature stability is superior to 304, making it suitable for steam heat exchange and high-temperature chemical fluid pipelines.

Higher hygiene level, suitable for high-end clean industries:The smooth pipe wall does not easily attract impurities and is resistant to various cleaning agents, meeting the standards of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, high-end food, and pure water equipment.

Longer service life and lower overall cost under harsh conditions:In harsh environments such as the seaside, chemical plants, and sewage treatment plants, 304 will corrode and leak in a short period, while 316L can be used stably for decades, reducing maintenance and replacement downtime losses.
